Recipe
First off, if you're ever curious to actually see us make Beard Balm or any of our other products please feel free to come visit our Detroit workshop. Since travel can't always be arranged, I'll go through some details here.
Step one, get your ingredients together. This is what we stock for Beard Balm:
- Grapeseed Oil
- Coconut Oil
- Lanolin
- Pure Beeswax
- Eucalyptus Essential Oil
- Lemon Essential Oil
- Geranium Essential Oil
- and a dash of Ponydust*
Of course, there are many good ingredients we could put into Beard Balm, but we've selected these because 1) we have some knowledge of these things, 2) all the ingredients can align with our values and 3) we're able to find enough high quality ingredients to make the amount of Beard Balm we want to make..
As far as proportions go, I'll be short on specifics. Just remember to measure each ingredient so you can replicate your work. The chemistry of natural ingredients in incredibly complex--lanolin alone contains at least 8000 different compounds. If you put enough effort into it, you'll likely discover an excellent product. Don't lose the recipe. If you're the generous type, share it with your friends. If you end up needing more than you can make in your kitchen, give us a ring, we been down that road before.
The last step is to heat up your raw ingredients (a candy thermometer works great for taking a temperature). Any hot surface will suffice. Know that heat affects the compounds in your mix and can burn you easily, use it wisely.
Once satisfied, pour from whatever you melted it down in (a spout comes in handy at this point) into a waiting receptacle. If it doesn't ever solidify, you probably made beard oil. Best of luck on your very own beard conditioner adventure!
Here are some tips you might appreciate. Make sure you're getting your ingredients from trustworthy sources, after-all, they'll end up on your face! Even if the ingredients are pure and consistent, each batch will be different, keep a journal and label your cans. Measure everything, time, atmospheric conditions...etc.
And finally, one frequently asked question:
Q: I just made my first batch of {insert name here}, wanna go can for can?
